Ice Photography

In March 2008, I sent a letter to the editor of Popular Photography to comment on a photo of ice in the latest issue.  In my letter, I mentioned that I had been experimenting with a unique method of sculpting and photographing ice, and sent a few samples as well as a link to my website.  Later that day, John Owens, Editor in Chief of Popular Photography, replied and indicated that he was considering including an article and one of my images in the May 2008 issue.  He asked me to write a short article and that was the last I heard about it.  When the May issue arrived, and my article was not there, I was a little disappointed, but I was happy to have been considered.  Much to my surprise, when I opened the June issue, there was my photo and article!  A scan of the page appears below.

Ice Photo Comments

This is really beautiful - but it looks like it might be something slimy and gross.

Gorgeous abstract images!

Wow....that's awesome.

Beautiful color.

The colors are extraordinary and the textures really cool (so to speak)!

Another gorgeous abstract...

Wow, I really like this series.

Brilliant!

You need to do a coffee-table book with these images!

Very cool series, Dom.

Are you sure it's ice? I think it's a NASA photo of the surface of Jupiter. I can see the great eye in the lower right. Very nice series!

This is really pretty - they are all so different.

Very nice!!!

I really like what I am seeing.

Beautiful.

Looks so much like an abstract painting.

Reminds me of a jellyfish.

Nice, nice.

Wow, looks like veins or something...nice!

This one's eerie - looks like blood on ice.

You really discovered a cool process with this series.

Love this one, colours and light are amazing.

These are great.

Absolutely beautiful!!!

They are all beautiful!

This looks more like a gel than ice. That's fantastic.

Very wild.

Absolutely organic! Very creative!
